Vol. 308 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Hospital Conditions.

17.

andMr. Gilhawley asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of public concern regarding the overcrowded conditions of Sligo hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that there is overcrowding at Sligo General Hospital. The development of the hospital is at present being planned by a project team which will increase the bed complement from 227 to 314 beds. In addition, a 40-bed acute psychiatric unit and a 60-bed orthopaedic unit will be provided at the hospital. The orthopaedic unit is at present in course of construction.

In order to meet the need for extra beds while the development of the hospital is being planned, the health board recently carried out adaptations to the top floor of the hospital which will result in an extra 15 beds becoming available in the near future.
