Vol. 308 No. 7

Written Answers. - State Transport.

449.

asked the Minister for Justice the total cost in the calendar year 1977 of the provision of domestic State transport to members of the Government, Parliamentary Secretaries, Ministers of State, certain office holders, and certain former office holders, including all costs of motor vehicles, fuel, replacements, all salaries, allowances, emoluments, superannuation and establishment costs involved, and the estimated total cost for 1978 for such internal transport services.

Precise costings for the provision of official transport for Ministers and others referred to in the question are difficult to make but, on the basis of a detailed analysis carried out some years ago and allowing for subsequent increases in pay and allowances, cost of cars, fuel and so on, it is now calculated that the total cost in 1977 in respect of the 26 persons concerned was of the order of £621,000.

For 1978, the total estimated cost in respect of the 29 persons who are now provided with official transport is £762,000.
