asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the number of arrests and seizures of illegal nets by Irish naval boats involving illegal drift netting for salmon at sea; and the fishery area in which each arrest and seizure was made.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Illegal Salmon Fishing.
As the reply is the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.
Following is the statement:
In the course of patrols carried out by the Naval Service during 1978 to combat illegal fishing for salmon at sea a total of 26 drift nets were seized and prosecutions against ten fishermen are now being considered.
The nets were seized in the following locations:
Fishery District |
Number of Nets |
Kerry |
13 |
Letterkenny |
4 |
Ballina |
3 |
Cork |
2 |
Ballyshannon |
2 |
Limerick |
2 |
Can the Minister tell us if he issued a directive to an Irish naval vessel not to catch the poachers off Galway?
That is a separate question.
That is a very facetious supplementary question.
I believe the boat turned back.
