Vol. 308 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - RTE Extension of Services.

19.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has considered RTE's application to extend its services into regional or local broad-casting on a permanent comprehensive basis; and, if so, his attitude on the matter.

As I said in a reply just now, I am giving consideration to a number of aspects of broadcasting. These include RTE's proposals for providing local radio services in certain areas.

I am sure the Minister is aware that there have been representations from Dublin and Shannonside for such radio facilities. Can he say when a decision will be made?

As I have said, I am concerning myself with every aspect and when I have completed my examination I will come to a decision on the matter.

Has the Minister any idea of when he will announce a decision? Will it be months or years?

I have not come to any final decision on it.

With regard to his consideration of this matter, will the Minister give a commitment to the House that he will consider favourably applications for community radio in both Dublin and Shannonside in advance of any national community radio programme, in other words, that he will not allow the establishment of a national programme to delay the provision of Radio Shannonside and Radio Dublin?

I have said that I am considering every aspect of broad-casting. Until then, I do not propose to commit myself.

I am asking the Minister to give advance favourable consideration to these two detailed proposals, not to have them suspended until such time as the overall matter can be considered. Otherwise, there will be a delay in the provision of these two services for which there is undoubted public demand.

I am considering all aspects.
