Vol. 309 No. 5

Written Answers. - Age of Majority.

70.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will take steps to reduce the age of majority from 21 to 18 years.

71.

andMrs. Desmond asked the Minister for Justice if the Government have as yet reached any decision on the question of amending legislation relating to the age of majority.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 70 and 71 together.

The law relating to the age of majority is under examination by the Law Reform Commission. The commission issued a working paper on the subject in December last. The paper, which was circulated for comment and criticism, did not represent the final views of the commission.

I may add that the working paper is a document of some 140 pages which indicates that the subject is quite a complicated one and that there are important issues involved in any proposals for change. I understand that the commission are now preparing their recommendations in the matter.
