asked the Minister for Defence why it was necessary for Irish Naval personnel to board and inspect Irish fishing vessels recently; and the outcome of the searches made.

A ban on herring fishing in the Celtic Sea has been in force since 6 February 1978. To ensure full compliance with the ban, it is necessary to inspect vessels of all countries fishing in the area. Proceedings have been taken against two Irish vessels.
