Vol. 309 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consumer Representative on EEC Committee.

3.

asked the Minister for Industry, Commerce and Energy why he failed to appoint a representative of the Irish Consumer Movement to the Economic and Social Committee of the EEC; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Of the total of 144 seats on the Economic and Social Committee of the EEC, Ireland has been allocated nine, two of which are filled by persons nominated by me. In these circumstances, representation directly by the Irish Consumer Movement on the committee could only be achieved at the expense of other nationally important interests. In considering this matter regard must be had to the fact that a number of the other members of the committee, including the representative of the social sector, can be deemed to represent at least to a considerable extent, consumer interests.

What were the criteria for the compilation of lists from which the representatives were selected?

I am not sure I understand what the Deputy means.

How did the Minister decide whom to pick? From which list of bodies were the representatives chosen?

The Minister can nominate two people only. It was represented to him that one of those people should be a direct representative of the consumer movement. I suggest that the representative of the social sector can validly speak for the consumer, and the representative of the trade unions can also speak for the consumer.

How big was the list?

Ireland has nine seats.

Were people entitled to submit names or where did the Minister get the lists?

People are entitled to submit names.
