Vol. 309 No. 8

Written Answers. - Wood Quay (Dublin) Excavation.

205.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in the light of the recent Government decision to allow a full excavation of the Wood Quay site, the moneys he intends to provide from his Vote for a full excavation and evaluation of this national monument; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

206.

asked the Minister for Education the amount of money being provided for the full excavation of the Wood Quay site; the number of qualified staff engaged or to be engaged in the project; the likely length of time anticipated for this work; if the final report on the excavation works will be published; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 205 and 206 together.

An amount of £89,000 has already been voted in the current financial year for archaeological excavations by the National Museum, £85,000 of which was intended for the Wood Quay excavation. I propose to introduce a Supplementary Estimate in due course for a further amount of £62,000 for the current financial year. The required provision in any subsequent financial year is a matter to be determined in the context of the preparation of the Estimates for the Public Service for that year.

There are 19 professional assistants and 41 labourers engaged on the excavation of the Wood Quay site by the National Museum at present, under the supervision of an officer of the museum's permanent staff, who is fulltime on this work.

As the portion of the site which is being excavated has been declared a national monument the joint consent of the Commissioners of Public Works and of the Dublin Corporation to the excavation work being done is required in accordance with the provisions of Article 14 of the National Monuments Act, 1930. The present position in that regard is that, as announced some time ago, the commissioners and corporation have jointly consented to allow the period up to 9 December 1978 for excavation pending final decision by the Government on the future of the site. The National Museum proposes to continue with the excavation work for the duration of the period authorised.
