Vol. 309 No. 8

Written Answers. - Saccharine Usage.

394.

asked the Minister for Health if he will outline the recommendations he has received from the Food Advisory Committee in relation to the use of saccharine in food; if saccharine is being used; if so, in what types of food; and if he proposes to implement the recommendations.

Recommendations made by the Food Advisory Committee on the use of saccharine in food and drink have been overtaken by recommendations subsequently made by the EEC Commission on 29 March last. The Food Advisory Committee are currently examining the extent of controls over the use of the substance which are necessary in this country arising from the EEC recommendations. To assist them in their consideration of the matter, the committee have before them information from the trade on the use of saccharine in food, drink and other products in Ireland.

As soon as the committee have concluded their examination, I will consider the implementation of their recommendations by way of regulations.

I am advised that some products in the following categories contain saccharine: soft drinks and concentrated squashes, chewing gum and sweets, diabetic and low calorie products, canned fruit and vegetables, salad cream, water-ices.
