Vol. 310 No. 1

Written Answers. - House Building Finance.

308.

asked the Minister for Finance his proposals, if any, to encourage the banks to divert some of their profits towards house building, in view of the increasing shortage of finance for house building purposes; and if he has had any consultations with the banks in this regard.

Since 1975 the associated banks have operated a house purchase loans scheme. It is estimated that loans amounting to approximately £53 million will be approved by them in 1978.

My Department and the Central Bank are engaged in ongoing discussions with the associated banks regarding the provision of housing finance by them under the scheme.
