Vol. 310 No. 1

Written Answers. - Retirement Age.

322.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware of the growing demand of many insured persons who have made social welfare contributions over a substantial number of years, to have the option of early retirement from the age of 60 years; and, in view of the gains which this concession would provide to the employment situation, if he will consider amending the scheme at this stage.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Government's Green Paper published in June last indicated that work-sharing arrangements, including early retirement, was one of the possibilities which would be examined as a means of alleviating the unemployment situation.

If that examination should indicate substantial support for early retirement, the question of amending the retirement pension scheme administered by my Department will be considered.
