asked the

Minister for Education the number and location of classes in primary schools which had 45 or more pupils in 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1978-79; and the action he is taking to eliminate such classes.

Particulars in regard to the number and location of classes in primary schools which had 45 or more pupils in 1976-77 and 1977-78, are set out in the attached tabular statement.

Similar figures in respect of the current year are not yet available.

I would refer the Deputy to replies Questions Nos. 371, 372, 375 and 376 today in regard to the steps being taken to improve the pupil-teacher ratio and to provide new teaching posts.

asked the Minister for Education the number of primary school teachers required to teach the expected increase in primary school pupils in the school year 1979-80; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

asked the Minister for Education the number of new teaching posts created in primary schools in 1978-79; and the expected numbers to be created for the school year 1979-80; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 371 and 372 together.

It is estimated on the basis of the pupil-teacher ratio applicable from 1 July 1978 to 1 January 1979 that there will be approximately 900 new teaching posts in national schools in 1978-79 and there will be a further 600 in 1979-80.

asked the Minister for Education the number of pupils in primary schools in the current year, and the projected numbers for the school year 1979-80.

The estimated numbers in national schools are as follows: 1978-79, 549,000; 1979-80, 556,000.
