asked the Minister for the Environment whether there is any proposal to build a bridge spanning the River Liffey, east of the new Matt Talbot Bridge, funded by private enterprise; if so, if he will give details of the proposals; and if he will outline the Government's policy in relation to such undertakings.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Liffey Bridge.
As I indicated in reply to a question on 16 February 1978, I am aware that a proposal of this nature has been under development. No submission in the matter has been made to my Department.
I hope to introduce legislation in the present session which would facilitate the participation by private enterprise in the provision of roads and bridges.
Does the Minister consider that such a bridge is desirable in this location? Does he see it as being necessary to cope with traffic in the area?
I presume the Deputy is referring to the proposed toll bridge over the Liffey. I consider it desirable.
What steps are the Department taking to make sure that traffic is handled in a desirable way at the moment, regardless of any applications which may be made? If the need is there, what is the Minister doing to meet it?
That is a matter for the local authority in consultation with the Garda Commissioner.
Could I have the Minister's answer as opposed to that of the Minister for Defence?
That is my own answer.
