Vol. 310 No. 4

Questions—Ceisteanna. Oral Answers. - Equality Promotion.

2.

asked the Minister for Labour if any single Department of State has a co-ordinating role in the promotion of equality by legislation or otherwise between men and women.

The Employment Equality Agency who operate under the aegis of my Department have the general function of working towards the elimination of discrimination in relation to employment and of promoting equality of opportunity between men and women in relation to employment. They also have the function of keeping under review the working of the Anti-Discrimination (Pay) Act, 1974, and the Employment Equality Act, 1977, and of making proposals for amending either of these Acts.

Issues, including the question of legislation, affecting the relative status of men and women in areas other than pay or employment would be for the Minister concerned.
