Vol. 310 No. 7

Written Answers. - Statutory Wage Controls.

267.

asked the Minister for Economic Planning and Development if, in view of the decision of the ICTU not to discuss a further national wage agreement, it is the Government's intention to introduce statutory wage controls.

The details of policies to follow on the expiry of the current national wage agreement have yet to be evolved. It is clear, however, that the level of wage increases obtained under the current agreement cannot be sustained for the future if the Government's overall economic strategy is to succeed. The attitudes of employers and the trade union movement will have a major influence on Government policies on wage developments. While the possibility of statutory controls cannot be ruled out, the Government are not contemplating such controls at this time.
