Vol. 310 No. 7

Written Answers. - Motor-cycle Pillion Passengers.

194.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware that insurance cover for pillion passengers on motor cycles is not compulsory, and that as a consequence many such persons who receive injuries do not receive any compensation; and if he will take steps to remedy the situation.

240.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware that, owing to the lack of insurance on pillion passengers, many victims of accidents get no compensation; and if he will take steps to remedy this situation.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 194 and 240 together.

Third party insurance in respect of pillion passengers on motor cycles is not compulsory under road traffic law and information as regards the number of such persons injured who do not receive compensation is not available to me. I have no proposals to make insurance for pillion passengers compulsory.
