Vol. 310 No. 7

Written Answers. - Local Authority Social Workers.

248.

asked the Minister for the Environment the local authorities which employ trained social workers; and the areas in each case in which they are deployed.

Qualifications for the office of social worker in local authorities provide that candidates for appointment to the post must possess a recognised University Degree or Diploma in Social Science or an equivalent qualification and have had such experience in social work as will enable them to discharge the duties of the office. Information furnished by local authorities to my Department indicates that the following local authorities have one or more posts of social worker on their establishment:

County Councils: Carlow, Clare, Kildare, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Limerick, Monaghan, Roscommon, Wicklow— one post each. Galway, Mayo—two posts each. Cork—three posts.

Galway Corporation—two posts. Limerick Corporation, Dundalk Urban District Council—one post each.

A number of local authorities also employ other officers who are engaged in community or social work and who are required to have a qualification in social science and/or have relevant experience or background in community or social work. Details of the local authorities and posts concerned are as follows:
