Vol. 310 No. 9

Written Answers. - Tenders by Private Contractors to School Authorities.

268.

asked the Minister for Education the procedure adopted and maximum allowable cost per square or cubic metre allowed by his Department in respect of tenders submitted by private contractors to school authorities for approved works of a capital nature in relation to (a) primary, (b) secondary, (c) vocational, (d) community and (e) comprehensive schools.

In the case of secondary, vocational, community and comprehensive schools, the procedure in respect of tenders for capital works is that they are submitted for approval to the Department. The tenders are examined in relation to the Department's cost limits and approval is given on the basis of the lowest tender. Where the lowest tender exceeds the cost limits, the question of a bill of reductions arises. Cost limits per square meter are the same for secondary, vocational, community and comprehensive schools and are adjusted from time to time in the light of circumstances prevailing.

The procedure in the case of national schools is that the Commissioners of Public Works accept the lowest suitable tender recommended by the architect provided such tender comes within the current cost limits.

It is not the practice to disclose details regarding cost limits.
