asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the very favourable prospects of treatment in the event of early detection of cervical cancer, he will make a vigorous effort to impress on all mothers the desirability of having smear tests.

Cancer education is currently conducted by the Irish Cancer Society supported by the Health Education Bureau.

The society are developing educational materials designed to impress upon those who may be at risk the importance of cancer prevention through early detection. This will include specific emphasis on such activities as breast self-examination, cervical smear testing and so on in the overall context of an integrated approach to cancer prevention through early detection.

The importance of cervical smear tests for women is stressed in leaflets currently issued by the Irish Cancer Society. In addition the society arrange for talks on the subject to women's groups.
