asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the steps taken and authority invoked by him when designating an area for conservation in respect of wildlife.
With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 102 and 103 together.
To date 57 wildfowl sanctuaries, including six since I assumed office, have been established following investigation by my officials in consultation with regional game councils and land owners concerned. These areas have been designated "no shooting" areas in the annual open season orders made by me under the Wildlife Act 1976.
The Act also provides for conservation of habitats of fauna and flora of scientific interest which may be designated "Nature Reserves" by ministerial order. To date no such orders have been made but a number of surveys are being undertaken with a view to the selection and establishment of such reserves.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry whether he has taken any steps to conserve Ireland's Eye as a bird sanctuary; and, if not, if he will do so without delay.
My information is that Ireland's Eye has been leased by its owner to An Taisce as a bird sanctuary. As of now I see no reason to interfere with that arrangement.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will make a statement in relation to the creation of a wildfowl sanctuary on Lough Mask, County Mayo.
I have accepted, in principle, the idea of a wildfowl sanctuary for a substantial portion of Lough Mask subject to agreement being forthcoming from other interests concerned. To this end proposals were made to the interested parties but to date these have not been agreed. My Department will continue to make efforts at reconciling the diverging view points but if, agreement cannot be reached, it may be necessary to abandon the proposal.
