Vol. 311 No. 5

Written Answers. - Fruit and Vegetable Imports.

163.

asked the Minister for Agriculture why imports of vegetables and fruit have increased by 27 per cent in value in the first 11 months of 1978 over 1977; and the extent to which these imports could be replaced by Irish products.

In the first 11 months of 1978 imports of fresh fruit and vegetables increased by 13 per cent in value compared with the corresponding period of 1977. Supplies of Irish produce were lower in 1978 due in part to the harsh spring and late growing conditions and also to some reduction in the acreage of vegetables. At the same time there was increased consumption, partly attributable to the record tourist season.

The horticultural industry can be expected to respond to permanent increases in demand for products which can be home produced but certain types and varieties of produce cannot, of course, be produced here.
