asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the present position regarding the signing of agreements on international tanker standards and procedures; if European agreements already signed by other Governments have not been signed; and the action, if any, he proposes to take in the matter.

The following table lists international conventions which specifically deal with tanker standards and procedures and shows Ireland's position as regards ratification thereof.

These amendments will be ratified by Ireland following the making of orders under the Oil Pollution of the Sea (Amendment) Act, 1977.

International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973 (MARPOL Convention) and 1978 Protocol thereto.

Question of introduction of legislation to give the force of law to the Convention and Protocol is being kept under review.

International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS Convention) and 1978 Protocol thereto.

Question of introduction of legislation to give the force of law to the Convention and Protocol is receiving attention.

There are no relevant European agreements specifically relating to tanker standards and procedures.
