Vol. 311 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford National Schools.

15.

asked the Minister for Education the up-to-date position regarding the erection of a new national school at Ring, County Waterford.

Sketch plans for the proposed extension scheme at this school have been received from the reverend chairman's architect and have been approved generally. When agreement has been reached with the reverend chairman regarding the local contribution, my Department will sanction a grant in the case. It is not possible to say, at this stage, when work on the extension scheme will commence.

16.

asked the Minister for Education the plans he has for the erection of a new school at Fenor, County Waterford.

17.

asked the Minister for Education the reason for the excessive delay in providing additional permanent accommodation at Fenor National School, County Waterford, which has inadequate sanitary facilities, is structurally unsound, and has been grossly overcrowded for a number of years.

18.

asked the Minister for Education when the first approach was made to his Department in respect of an extension to the Fenor National School, County Waterford; and, in view of the present state of the school building and the educational needs of the area, if an extension or a new school is to be provided; and, if so, when.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 16, 17 and 18 together.

The question of the suitability and the adequacy of the accommodation at this school was first raised by way of parliamentary question in February 1975.

The Commissioners of Public Works were asked to report on the feasibility of extending the school to provide additional accommodation, with suitable toilet and other amenities. The school authorities have obtained an extension of the school site with this end in view but, because of the difficult nature of the site, the commissioners find it necessary to have detailed investigations and feasibility studies made before planning can begin on a scheme of extension and improvement as proposed.

I am asking that the matter be dealt with as being urgent.
