Vol. 311 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Physical Education in Schools.

36.

asked the Minister for Education the proposals, if any, for the improvement of physical education in primary and second-level schools.

The primary school curriculum is planned so that all aspects of physical education for pupils from infant classes to senior groups are catered for.

All new schools are being equipped with apparatus for use in the development of physical education. As well as supplying basic equipment to older schools the playgrounds are being surfaced so that games may be played all the year round. In-service education courses, directed by highly qualified personnel, are provided for teachers.

In the case of second-level schools the improvement of physical education is also under continuing review and I have the advice of the syllabus committee for the subject in this matter as required. The steady flow of graduates in physical education from Thomond College, Limerick, also serves to enhance the quality of instruction in physical education.

The Sports Council, appointed a year ago are to furnish advice to me continuously on the implementation of the Government's policy of "Sport for All", which is, of course, strongly linked with physical education.

As recently announced I am resuming the programme for the provision of physical education facilities in community, secondary and vocational schools.

Can the Minister say how many primary teachers on average avail of in-service courses relating to physical education in one year.

If the Deputy puts down a question to me about that matter I will get the figures for him.

I should like to know from Deputy Horgan if Question No. 33 is for oral answer?

Yes. Will that be taken tomorrow?

It is Question No. 35 that I am prepared to allow go for written reply.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I should like to raise the subject matter of Questions Nos. 11 and 12 on the Adjournment.

I will communicate with the Deputy.

I respect the right of the Chair to reject my request for a Private Notice Question but I should like permission to raise the matter referred to, the question of the National Social Service Council, on the Adjournment.

I will communicate with the Deputy. The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
