Vol. 312 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drimnagh (Dublin) Secondary School.

22.

asked the Minister for Education the reason for the delay in building the extension to Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School, Drimnagh, Dublin, which has been approved by the Department.

23.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the deep dissatisfaction of teachers, parents and pupils of Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School, Mourne Road, Drimnagh, at the slow progress of the proposed school extension, and especially with the recent reply suggesting that it will not go to tender until the end of the year; and if in view of the circumstances, if he will seek a tender as urgently as possible.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 22 and 23 together.

The position in this matter is as stated in my reply to Question No. 167 of 7 February 1979. Progress in the preliminary arrangements in such cases depends on the input from both sides, that of the school's consultants and that of my Department's building unit, and I can assure the Deputy that the remaining stages of the planning process will be dealt with as expeditiously as possible.

Is the Minister aware of the very grim situation in this school? They are managing only because of the excellent work and sacrifices by the staff. In view of this, will the Minister make a special effort to send this work out to tender within the next few months rather than at the end of the year?

Yes, but I want to put it on record that the long delay which has occurred was not due to any dilatoriness on the part of the Department. Eight months were lost waiting for a submission from the school architect.

Can we take it that the Minister will send this out for tender within the next few months?

Certainly.

Would the Minister think of visiting this school? Circumstances are extremely bad. Children are being taught in landings.

The Deputy is aware that in mid-1973 the building unit approved a grant and reconditioned the building for use as a secondary school. This is the second phase. There has been some delay and I assure the Deputy that, in so far as it lies within my power, I will push it with all speed.
