Vol. 312 No. 8

Written Answers. - Killybegs (Donegal) School.

179.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the national school population in the Killybegs area of County Donegal has increased to the position that an additional teacher is required and that because space is only available in the old school the additional class can only be accommodated there; in view of the fact that 46 children are already being taught in the old school which has no toilet or water services and is substandard in many other ways; and in view of the general concern among parents and in the community if he would make a full and comprehensive statement on the immediate needs and future needs for primary educational facilities in Killybegs.

I assume that the school to which the Deputy refers is Niall Mór National School, Killybegs, County Donegal. There is a staff of seven teachers in this school and an enrolment of about 223 pupils. An additional appointment is not required at present.

As indicated in reply to Question No. 349 of 22 November 1978, additional accommodation has been sanctioned for this school which is only 18 years old. However, the Commissioners of Public Works report that the site is too small to accommodate the proposed extension and that it is not feasible to enlarge the site.

The question as to what should be done to provide adequate accommodation for the pupils of the school is being investigated.

A grant has been sanctioned towards the cost of carrying out essential improvements to the old school building to make it more suitable for temporary school use.
