Vol. 312 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - VEC Problem.

23.

andMr. Griffin asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the terms of the Vocational Education Committees (Allowances to Members) (Amendment) Rules, 1978, are not applicable to members of country boroughs scheduled urban district VEC's; and the proposals, if any, to introduce amending legislation.

I am aware of this problem and have proposals under consideration for dealing with it.

Could the Minister give some indication of when he hopes to introduce amending legislation to bring into effect these proposals?

If legislation is necessary we will bring it in. But, as I say in my reply, I am aware of the problem and I have plans for dealing with it.

I am aware that amending legislation is necessary but it is relatively minor. I think it needs only the deletion of one word "county" in the Vocational Act.

I know that the 11 non-county ones are the people who are at the moment, so to speak, suffering. I think that there is an analagous case in relation to the members of the urban councils and that certain measures were taken by a previous Minister for the Environment or Local Government and we are thinking along the same lines.
