Vol. 313 No. 2

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take No. 7 (resumed), No. 8 (resumed) and No. 9 (resumed).

On the Order of Business, could I ask the Taoiseach when the Government propose to bring before the House legislation in respect of civil legal aid arising from the commitment entered into on behalf of the State in Strasbourg a short while ago?

The Minister for Justice will be bringing a memorandum before the Government shortly on this subject. I would hope to be in a position to make a more comprehensive statement on the matter in a few weeks. I could notify the Deputy in the meantime when that could be made. I might say in passing that it may not be necessary to have legislation. A scheme to implement the idea could be introduced without legislation. However, as I said, I hope to be in a position to make a fuller statement in a few weeks.

I welcome the Taoiseach's reply because it is important that we be seen not to delay on a matter on which we have entered into an international obligation.

With your permission, A Cheann Comhairle, I propose to raise on the Adjournment the subject matter of Questions Nos. 235 and 236 on yesterday's Order Paper.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I should like written replies to Questions Nos. 179 to 183, inclusive, on today's Order Paper.
