Vol. 313 No. 2

Written Answers. - Black Castle, Naas.

185.

asked the Minister for Finance the nature of the threat to the site on the Black Castle in the town of Naas which necessitated the making of a temporary preservation order, the reason for the order being only temporary, how long it will remain in force, the action to be taken thereafter if any damage has yet been done to the site and the archaeological and historical significance of the site.

Buildings on the site have been demolished and the ground was being levelled apparently in preparation for rebuilding. A temporary preservation order which is effective for six months was made because the Commissioners of Public Works were of opinion on the information available to them that when the site had been archaeologically investigated it would not be necessary to preserve it indefinitely.

The archaeological significance of the site can only be determined by excavation. Little is known of the history of the castle.
