Vol. 313 No. 4

Written Answers. - Women in Work Force.

231.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of women (a) in the work force; (b) as a percentage of the total work force; (c) as a percentage of the total number of women aged 16 or over in the country; and (d) the percentage of (a) who are married.

The series of labour force surveys provides the only source of the information requested by the Deputy. The most recent survey relates to late April 1977 and the relevant figures derived from it are shown below. In this context the total labour force covers persons recorded as unemployed in that survey, including those seeking regular work for the first time.

(a) The total number of women in the labour force

309,000

(b) The percentage of the total labour force which was female

27.0%

(c) The percentage of females aged 15* years and over who were in the labour force

28.2%

(d) The percentage of the female labour force which was married

27.3%

*A classification based on the lower age limit of 16 years is not available.

232.

asked the Minister for Education the percentage of women at work accounted for by (a) married and (b) unmarried female teachers.

The labour force sample survey for 1977 gives a figure of 288,300 as the number of women at work. The number of women teachers in 1977-78 was 21,100 approximately. This number represents 7.3 per cent of the total number of women at work in 1977.

Figures indicating marital status of women are not readily available but it is estimated that approximately 45 per cent of women teachers in first and second level schools are married.
