Vol. 313 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre Vandalism.

137.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the recent incidents at Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre resulting in damage to goods and shops and other losses there; and if he will ensure that extra gardaí are provided at the centre so as to prevent a recurrence.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that following a number of cases of larceny, assault and malicious damage at Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre, the lcoal Superintendent of the Garda Síochána met the directors of the shopping centre on 21 February 1979 and recommended that increased security measures be taken at the centre. The centre is, of course, private property and security arrangements within the complex are primarily a matter for the owners. I understand that new measures have in fact been introduced on the advice of the Garda and that they have resulted in an improvement in the situation. The Garda, for their part, will continue to give as much attention as possible to the shopping centre, having regard to their other commitments.
