Vol. 313 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meeting with British Prime Minister.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if it is his intention to seek a meeting with the British Prime Minister after the new British administration has formed, following the election.

I envisage meeting the British Prime Minister on a mutually agreeable date as soon as practicable after the forthcoming general election.

Would the Taoiseach like to indicate if at that meeting he will be seeking from the British Government any fresh initiatives on Northern Ireland, what would be the character of these initiatives by the British Government, and whether there will be any role for the Irish Government?

We can hardly discuss now everything that may be discussed at the meeting mentioned by the Deputy.

I thoroughly endorse what the Ceann Comhairle has said. I do not think Deputy O'Leary would expect me to give any particulars, or any details whatever, of what I would be proposing to discuss with the British Prime Minister, whomever he or she may be. The Deputy can take it that naturally I would be discussing the Northern Ireland situation, cross-Border co-operation, economic matters affecting this country and the UK, and very likely any matter that would be of common interest in relation to the EEC.
