asked the Minister for Education the salary scales presently in force in respect of qualified national teachers, secondary teachers, vocational teachers, community and comprehensive school teachers also the stipend in respect of posts of responsibility and the general method of allocating such posts.

The information requested is as follows:

Common Basic Scale for Teachers (1-3-79) 3643, 3783, 3920, 4060, 4196, 4337, 4484, 4631, 4782, 4929, 5077, 5266, 5455, 5644, 5931.

Special Functions Allowances: (applicable to Secondary Schools only)

Claims for increases of 4.5 per cent with effect form 1 July 1978 and 3.3 per cent with effect from 1 January 1979, on salaries and allowances payable to teachers on the common basic scale were the subject of a recent arbitration hearing. The report of this hearing has not yet been issued.

Explanatory Note on Points Ratings

Points ratings of schools are determined at present on the basis of points weightings of pupils as follows:

In addition there is an arrangement whereby, in the case of any school where all or the majority of pupils are under 9 years of age, the points rating of the schools may be determined by multiplying the number on the rolls by 1.75.

The number of Grade A and B posts are fixed by reference to the points rating of the school in accordance with the following table:
