Vol. 314 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Toll Plan.

8.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of revenue expected to accrue from the implementation of the proposed road toll plan, and the estimated amount of revenue remitted by the Exchequer by the abolition of road tax for a similar period.

I have made it clear to the Dáil that there is no toll road plan proposed for implementation. The Local Government (Toll Roads) Bill, 1979, currently before this House, would enable road authorities to make schemes in respect of the charging of tolls on public roads and bridges, subject to compliance with certain procedures and to my approval. The initiative in the making of any such scheme would, when the Bill has been enacted, rest entirely with the road authorities. The amount of revenue which might accrue over any particular period in respect of any particular scheme or schemes cannot at this stage be calculated. The second part of the Deputy's question is accordingly not relevant.
