Vol. 314 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Closure.

22.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the patron of a school (details supplied) intends to close the school; and if he will facilitate efforts to keep the school open under local patronage and management.

My Department have been notified of the patron's intention to close the school in question and to dispose of the property which includes the school and a church. I understand that the pupils can be conveniently accommodated in other national schools. I recently met a deputation of parents who were anxious to keep the school in operation. I agreed to consider what my Department could do to assist them. It will not, however, be possible for my Department to make funds available towards the purchase of the present site.

Is it in order for the patron of a school in this situation to sell a school premises regardless of the wishes of the parents concerned?

I do not know what is the legal position with regard to this school and I would be reluctant to make a comment on that question which is an entirely new one.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, if local interests succeed in acquiring the premises will the Minister continue to fund the school on the same basis as it has been funded up to now?

When the parents or committee reach that stage, if they come to me I will not be unsympathetic.
