Vol. 315 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Street Environmental Problems.

14.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the environmental problems for people living in Mayor Street, Dublin 1, and if he will have an urgent investigation carried out to ensure a curbing of the nuisance from traffic, pollution, etc., for people in this area.

I have been informed by Dublin Corporation that complaints have been received concerning environmental conditions in the Mayor Street area, Dublin, and that measures necessary to alleviate the nuisance caused by heavy traffic are being investigated. It is understood that offenders responsible for littering are about to be prosecuted.

Does the Minister anticipate that the action which the local authorities are apparently to undertake in regard to littering in the Sheriff Street area will appreciably affect——

The Mayor Street area.

It is the same street. Does he expect that it will bring about a substantial improvement for people living in that area? That suggestion is laughable. Is he aware that the people living in this part of the city substantially outnumber the average-sized town in rural Ireland? In this area there is no cinema, police station, community centre or any of the normal facilities which are part of the community.

Question No. 15.

That is a reasonable question and I will not be shouted down. I have asked about an environmental problem and it is a reasonable question.

The Deputy is not permitted to make a speech.

Will the Minister answer the question?

I have no information about cinemas.

It is the Minister's job to have information about the environment. He does not know what the environment means.

The Deputy should put down a question.
