Vol. 315 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballyshannon-Bundoran Road.

21.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the tragic accidents that occur on the Ballyshannon-Bundoran Road, and the steps he proposes to take to safeguard the lives of Army personnel using this road.

I am aware of three road traffic accidents involving members of the Defence Forces on the road mentioned since May 1975. The military authorities have taken steps to notify military personnel at Finner Camp of such road traffic hazards and have issued reflective armbands to all personnel. The question of adequate road safety is a matter for the county council and the local military authorities have been in touch with them in relation to providing safety measures on the road concerned.

Would the Minister consider that trucks should be made available to collect the Army personnel in Ballyshannon and Bundoran to ensure that they get home safely? There have been more than three accidents on this road in the past five years. There have been two deaths in the past two months. Will the Minister look into it?

The question refers to traffic accidents involving military personnel. I understand there were three fatal accidents since 1975. On the other point raised by the Deputy, I do not know whether it would be practical to do what he suggested, but I will have it looked into.
