asked the Minister for Defence the percentage of salary presently paid to the following ranks on retirement having served more than 21 years: (1) Private, (2) Commandant, (3) Lieutenant Colonel.

The required information is as set out in the attached statement:

Notes:

1. A minimum of 21 years' service is required for the grant of a pension, maximum pension is payable after 31 years' service.

2. In addition to pension, a gratuity equal to one week's pay and allowances is payable in respect of each year's service up to a maximum of 31 weeks pay and allowances.

Notes:

1. Retired pay for Commandant and Lieutenant-Colonel varies with the number of years' service and the number of years in the rank.

2. The rates of retired pay for Commandant expressed as a percentage of Army pay range from 44.9 per cent to 48.9 per cent.

3. The rates of retired pay for Lieutenant-Colonel expressed as a percentage of Army pay range from 48.9 per cent to 50.8 per cent.

4. In addition to retired pay, a gratuity which varies from £5,580 in the came of a Commandant and £6,045 in the case of a Lieutenant-Colonel up to a maximum of one and one-half years' pay and allowances in each case, depending on age at date of retirement, is also payable.
