At 2 January 1979 there were 90,601 men and 65,942 women employed in the public service and the percentage of women in such employment on that date was 42.1 per cent. These particulars refer to the civil service (including industrial employees), teachers, Defence Forces, Garda Síochána and health boards but not to the local authority service for which the figures sought are not readily available.
