66.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is satisfied that the supplementary welfare allowance scheme is operating as intended, and that it is proving effective in combating poverty in Ireland.

67.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is satisfied that applicants for supplementary welfare allowance are being fully informed of their rights under the Supplementary Welfare Allowance Act.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 66 and 67 together.

The supplementary welfare allowances scheme, would appear to be operating reasonably satisfactorily and I believe that it is making a worthwhile contribution to our social services. However, I am always prepared to consider any constructive suggestions for its improvement. I am satisfied that applicants for supplementary welfare allowance are being informed of their rights.
