Vol. 316 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fenian Street (Dublin) Postal Workers.

454.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of complaints he has received from postal workers concerning conditions in their Fenian Street offices, Dublin, the dates of such complaints and the specific action undertaken by his Department on each occasion.

No special record is kept of complaints of this kind. Since June 1974, when Fenian House was first occupied by my Department, staff representations were received concerning such matters as delay in replacing broken window panes, draughty windows, sun glare, seepage of sewage from an adjoining premises and rat and insect infestation from the same premises. Appropriate remedial action was taken in all cases where this could be done by my Department or by the Office of Public Works.

The nuisance arising from the bad condition of the adjoining premises, which were the main cause of staff representations, were taken up on a number of occasions with Dublin Corporation and with the Dublin Medical Officer of Health. The present position is that the corporation are considering making a closure order in respect of the premises concerned. Meanwhile the drainage gully in Fenian House is being cleaned daily and deodorisers have been provided.
