Vol. 317 No. 1

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Business in the following order: Nos. 3, 4, 7, 8, 9 and 10. By agreement No. 4 will be taken without debate but it may be discussed during the debate on Second Stage of the European Communities (Amendment) Bill, 1979, which will be taken tomorrow. Private Members' Business, from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., will be No. 24 (resumed).

I should like to know if the Government are doing anything to ensure that the banks open tomorrow. I do not think there is any valid reason why normal business outside the matter in dispute should not continue. I am talking about the ordinary business of issuing cheque books and so on.

The Deputy is not putting a question that is in order.

It is a matter of urgency.

I am not disputing that, but the Chair must be concerned with what is in order.

(Cavan-Monaghan): I am sure the Tánaiste would like to give his views on the matter.

Will the Tánaiste give an indication of whether the banks will open tomorrow morning or not?

Did the banks get the permission of the Tánaiste to close?

There seems to be no point in making inquiries like this because, apparently, there is no way of getting in something which is of concern to the public.

Push on to the Plant Varieties Bill.

The Deputy will be aware that the Government have been in close touch with the situation.

It is about the only thing that the Government are in touch with.
