Vol. 317 No. 1

Written Answers. - Burial Grounds.

356.

asked the Minister for the Environment if local authorities are empowered to purchase land for the purpose of establishing burial grounds and to provide moneys for their development and upkeep, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Sanitary authorities are empowered under the Public Health (Ireland) Act, 1878, to acquire land either by agreement or compulsorily for the purpose of establishing burial grounds. Under the same Act they have power to develop and maintain such burial grounds and for this purpose they have power to expend such moneys as they consider necessary.
