Vol. 317 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tripartite Committee on Employment.

367.

asked the Minister for Economic Planning and Development the additional measures agreed with the Tripartite Committee on Employment established under the National Understanding to provide employment to meet the shortfall in employment targets and the net additional yield in employment arising from each proposal in the current year and in 1980.

The Tripartite Standing Committee on Employment are still examining ways in which further jobs should be created under the special joint public and private sector employment programme to underwrite the shortfall on employment targets. The net additional yield in employment envisaged is 5,000 jobs and it is hoped that these jobs will begin to come on stream early in the new year. As a first step, the committee approved on 1 November last a programme for the provision of 1,000 jobs in the public sector in 1980. These new jobs will arise in a number of areas, as follows: environmental works (250 jobs); educational services, including youth and sports projects (225 jobs); provision of tourist amenities (110 jobs); and projects to be undertaken by the Irish Sugar Company (65 jobs), Bord na Móna (150 jobs) and the County Development Teams (200 jobs).
