Vol. 317 No. 2

Written Answers. - Midleton (Cork) Sewage Treatment Plant.

376.

Mr. D. Barry, Miss Barry

andMr. Hegarty asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make funds available to Midleton Urban District Council for the provision of a sewage treatment plant to treat the effluent from Midleton and the surrounding district and prevent the pollution of the estuary at East Ferry.

In the local authority's proposals for Midleton sewerage scheme, for which contract documents are at present before my Department, the treatment provided for is comminution to aid oxidation and subsequent dispersal by way of sea outfall at Rathcoursey Point.

The Cork Habour survey investigations have, inter alia, shown that the assimulative capacity of the harbour at this location is adequate to accept the discharge proposed. In the circumstances the question of making funds available for plant to provide further treatment does not arise.
