asked the Minister for the Public Service the total cost of salaries and wages in the public service.
Written Answers. - Public Services Salaries and Wages.
Public service pay comprises the pay of civil servants—including industrial civil servants—Defence Forces, Garda, teachers—including proportion of vocational teachers' pay borne by the Exchequer—and health board employees. A total of £835,494,000 has been voted for public service pay in 1979.
409.
asked the Minister for the Public Service the percentage of the expenditure on each Vote represented by (a) staff salaries within each Department, (b) staff salaries in semiautonomous agencies wholly funded by the Vote in 1970, 1977 and 1979.
(a) The information sought in this part of the question is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report. The statement sets out the expenditure on civil service—nonindustrial—salaries and allowances as a percentage of net expenditure on each vote for the years ended 31 March 1970 and 31 December 1977. The figures for 1979 are based on voted estimates; (b) It is regretted that the information sought by the Deputy in this part of the question is not readily available and could be provided only at disproportionate cost in staff time.

Note: The percentage is over 100 in some cases because of the effect of appropriations-in-aid. Where titles of votes have changed the 1979 title is used.
