Vol. 317 No. 4

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

428.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reasons repairs have not been carried out on Pullough telephone kiosk, County Offaly.

The repairs were delayed initially by the non-availability of some essential stores and, more recently when the stores became available, by a fault in the cable serving the kiosk. The repairs are in hands and it is expected they will be completed in the next few days.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs with regard to the Drimnagh, Ballyfermot, Crumlin, and Inchicore areas in Dublin (a) the number of telephone kiosks in each area, (b) the date of the last telephone kiosk inspection in each area, (c) the percentage of telephone kiosks in each area which were found to be in working order at the time of the last inspection and (d) the number of inspections which have taken place in each area over the last four months.

The information requested is as follows:

(a) Drimnagh, 11; Ballyfermot, 11; Crumlin, 11; Inchicore, 8.

(b) The kiosks are inspected daily from Monday to Friday.

(c) About 60 per cent.

(d) About 85.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reasons officials of his Department have refused to repair a telephone for a person (details supplied) in County Westmeath in view of the fact that rental is still being paid for same.

The Department did not refuse to carry out the repairs. The delay in having the coin-box telephone in question repaired resulted from the subscriber not being prepared to agree to pay the cost of repairs involved, which were not regarded as due to normal wear and tear. The telephone was repaired on 30 November on the assumption that the subscriber will, in fact, bear the cost involved when the account is sent to him.
