Vol. 317 No. 6

Written Answers. - Community Schools.

361.

asked the Minister for Education if he is now in a position to sign the deeds of trust for all operating community schools; the number of schools involved; and the number of pupils in the schools concerned.

Subject to completion of the deed in the case of each individual school, the agreement may be signed by the parties concerned. The number of community schools at present is 28 and the approximate number of pupils enrolled in these schools is 14,400.

362.

asked the Minister for Education whether the deadline of September 1980 for completion of the proposed new community school at Carrigaline, County Cork, has been modified and, if so, why.

363.

asked the Minister for Education if he will give an assurance that the new community school at Carrigaline, County Cork, will be ready for occupation in September 1980.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 362 and 363 together.

As I stated in reply to previous questions from the Deputy, it was my original expectation that building work on the new school at Carrigaline would have commenced during the summer of 1979 and that the school would be ready for occupation in September 1980.

Difficulties which subsequently arose in connection with the site and the level of the tenders received precluded the placings of a contract by the date originally envisaged. I have recently had discussions with a representative deputation from the area and it has been agreed that the opening date for the school should be September 1981.
