Vol. 317 No. 9

Written Answers. - New Jobs Statistics.

111.

asked the Minister for Economic Planning and Development the total net number of new jobs (a) created and (b) filled during 1978 and the number of these which occurred in manufacturing industry, other private enterprises and the public service.

The total net number of new jobs filled in 1978 is estimated to have been 17,000.

The increases in employment which occurred in manufacturing industry, other private enterprises and the public service in 1978 were 7,000, 6,000 and 9,000 respectively. There was a decline of 5,000 in employment in agriculture.

A further 2,000 jobs were created in the public service in 1978, but these were still unfilled by the end of the year.

112.

asked the Minister for Economic Planning and Development the number of net new jobs provided in private industry in 1978.

It is estimated that the net increase in employment in the private component of the industrial sector in 1978 was 11,050.

113.

asked the Minister for Economic Planning and Development the amount by which the employment targets for 1979 have fallen short of expectation.

At this stage it is not possible to make firm estimates of employment creation in 1979. I would tentatively estimate net employment increase at 15,000. This may need to be revised upwards in the light of up-to-date employment statistics which have been delayed by the effects of the postal dispute.
