Vol. 318 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leinster House Shelter for Gardaí.

370.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will review the situation regarding the front and rear gates of the Houses of the Oireachtas with a view to providing some basic overhanging shelter for the gardai on point duty at these posts and if he will consult with the security authorities on the matter.

As indicated in my reply to previous questions, the position is that for reasons of security the Garda authorities do not consider that Garda duties in the vicinity of Leinster House could be adequately discharged from a sentry-box or other similar shelter. Representations in favour of some kind of protection, though not expressly in terms of what is stated in the question, have been made again recently on behalf of members on this duty and are being considered by the Garda authorities.
